Sports from a Buckeye's Perspective

It's a Good Time to be Me

I love being me right now. It has nothing to do with money, women, or power (unfortunately), but it has everything to do with sports. My teams are making me very happy right now.

My beloved Ohio State Buckeyes are getting ready to play for the BCS National Championship while Troy Smith is all but a lock to win the Heisman trophy. Did I mention Troy and the offense hung 42 points and over 500 yards on hated Michigan?

My basketball Buckeyes have established themselves as one of the five best teams in the nation even WITHOUT the most dominant player of the last 20 years. Once he comes back they have the best chance of anyone in the country to win it all come March. Meanwhile the women's team is 6th in the nation with a legit shot at the title as well.

My Bengals have now overcome a 4-5 start to reach 7-5 with dominating defensive performances against the Browns and Ravens. Carson Palmer is playing at a Pro Bowl level at the moment and Chad Johnson has been flat out ridiculous over the last four games with over 600 yards receiving and five touchdown catches. Wow!

The Cavs are also doing pretty well right now and are one of the three best teams in the Eastern Conference with a chance to reach the Finals this year.

That's all for now kiddies!

 We've Hit the Stretch Run

Well, with an 8-0 record and only four more regular season games remaining things are looking good for my beloved Buckeyes. Here are my predictions for each remaining game and more:

Minnesota

-This Minnesota team is significantly worse than the one the Buckeyes trashed last season in their own stadium. That does not bode well for the Golden Gophers. While Ohio State was putting a 44-3 smacking on Indiana, the Gophers were squeaking by Division I-AA North Dakota State 10-9. This one could get really ugly.

at Illinois

-Another team that is lacking in the "talent" category. Back-to-back home losses to Indiana and Ohio earlier this season were not pretty. Giving up 50+ points at home to Ohio State is not going to look much better.

at Northwestern

-This is scary, but Northwestern might be the worst team in the Big Ten this season. Yes, they might actually be worse than Illinois. This team gave up 33 points to Penn State's anemic offense and gave up over 30 at home in a loss to Division I-AA New Hampshire. Yikes. Think the Buckeyes can crack 60? Maybe if Tressel didn't have a conscience.

Michigan

-The Game of the Millenium! One versus Two for all the marbles! Hyperbole! This might be the most hyped game in the history of college football. ESPN College Gameday started a timer last Saturday for The Game. It's being billed already as "Michigan's dominant defense against Ohio State's unstoppable offense!" Sorry, but that's not how it is. Remember when the Fiesta Bowl last year was supposed to be an offense (Notre Dame) versus a defense (Ohio State) match-up? Well people forgot Ohio State plays both extremely well. Expect similar results this year against Michigan as Ohio State hold the Wolverines to around 10 points and puts up around 27. There are going to be a lot of happy Buckeye fans and a lot of irritated analysts much like the Texas game.

One last prediction: Troy Smith wins the Heisman by the most comfortable margin since Ron Dayne in 1999.

The College Football Season So Far

The college football season is more than halfway over, and here is what I've observed so far:

Ohio State is the best team in the nation. The best way to describe this team is to say that it is a machine. It methodically drives down the field and scores touchdown after touchdown while smothering the other team with its defense. Troy Smith, the best quarterback in the nation and future Heisman trophy winner, has the calm, cool demeanor necessary to lead this team of superstars. There is a very real possibility that no team will come within two touchdowns of the Buckeyes this year. There really is only one team capable of doing so, which brings me to my next observation...

Michigan is the clear second best in the nation. They have a tremendous defense and an offense that is just good enough to keep teams from coming too close. We will probably see a one-versus-two match-up November 18 between the Buckeyes and Wolverines with the winner going on to win the National Championship.

The SEC is overrated. Auburn, LSU, Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee were all supposed to be title contenders. They aren't. LSU and Georgia have no offense. Auburn has a vastly overrated defense. Florida's Chris Leak still isn't ready for the big time. Tennessee choked at home against Florida.

That's all for now kiddies.

 Ohio-Pennsylvania Challenge

This was a big weekend for football teams from Ohio and Pennsylvania as Ohio State took on Penn State in Columbus and Cincinnati traveled to Pittsburgh. Both games were tabbed as "revenge" games for the Buckeyes and Bengals and both teams exacted that revenge.

Ohio State and Penn State were horrendous on offense on a day marred by rain and wind as the two teams combined for 3 points in the first half. Ohio State found its rhythm in the second half though and finished the game on a 28-3 run thanks to two interceptions returned for touchdowns and an incredible touchdown throw by Heisman frontrunner Troy Smith. The Buckeyes weren't pretty, but they avenged last year's 17-10 loss with a 28-6 thrashing.

The Bengals and Steelers have nothing but hatred and contempt for each other and it showed in today's game. The Steelers started out hot, but the Bengals came back to take a 14-7 halftime lead. The third quarter was all Steelers as they turned turnovers into a 17-14 lead going into the fourth. The fourth quarter belonged to the Bengals though as Carson Palmer turned two Steelers turnovers into touchdown passes to TJ Houshmandzadeh, one of them a specatular juggling catch. The Bengals secondary dismantled Ben Roethlisboerger as the Steelers quarterback threw three interceptions and no touchdowns. The Bengals finished the game with Big Ben's third interception in the end zone to preserve a 28-20 victory.

It seems as though Ohio has bragging rights over Pennsylvania for now.

 Musings on the First Weekend

Well, the first weekend of college football is now in the books, and here is what I noticed:

The Buckeyes' offense is good. I mean scary good. I mean 28 points in 10 seconds good (at least that's what it felt like). What is really scary is that Ohio State didn't even seem to try that hard. Troy Smith ran the ball only once and was never sacked on his way to 297 yards and 3 touchdowns while Antonio Pittman and Chris Wells both averaged at least five yards per carry. Now if the defense can hold up against Texas and Iowa these Buckeyes will breeze into the National Championship game.

M*ch*g*n has a tremendous defense, but boy did their offense have problems. Vandy should not have given them that much trouble moving the ball. Hart looked good, but Henne looked like he had regressed since last season.

Penn State managed only 76 yards rushing against Akron. That's just pathetic.

Colorado and Duke both lost at home to Division I-AA teams. I think those I-AA teams should now be given I-A status while Duke and Colorado drop from I-A to I-AA. It's only fair.

Texas looked great on defense and Colt McCoy (most white trash name since Major Applewhite...also a Texas quarterback) was very efficient...against horrible horrible North Texas, arguably the worst team in I-A football. Basically I'm saying I have no idea how good Texas really is.

Notre Dame also looked good on defense in a 14-10 win over Georgia Tech, but Tech is a notoriously bad offensive team. On the other hand, Brady Quinn looked very average in throwing for over 200 yards and no touchdowns. To be fair though, Tech usually has a tremendous defense.

Speaking of teams with no offense and lot's of defense, I just finished watching the Florida State/Miami game. Yikes. Both teams combined for something like 8 yards rushing. I don't care how good a defense is, that is alarming. Neither of these teams is championship caliber, but at least Florida State could manage over 130 yards passing to pull off the victory. Remember when these two teams would light up their opponents with 40-50 points every game? Yeah, these teams will struggle to score 40-50 points combined over the next few games.

Saturday is a monster day for college football. You have Notre Dame against Penn State as the warm up for Ohio State against Texas. I have a feeling Notre Dame will squeeze past Penn State and my beloved Buckeyes will rely on Troy Smith to guide them past Texas a la Vince Young last season. Go Bucks!
